The Invitations

I finally ordered the invitations last night. I think I about went cross-eyed looking for errors. Of course, I had my mom and J read over it as well.

Anyway, I absolutely love it: It's our colors, it's modern, it's elegant and indicative of the formality of the occasion.

Jay is creating the map/directions/reception card to slip into the envelope.

I have to order that danged embosser. The monogram is ready to be sent to the company.

Everything should be here in the next couple of weeks. In time for us to have a stuffing/embossing/stamping/writing party the weekend of one of my showers, April 15. The plan is to mail them on or around May 1.

Speaking of invitations, I got the invite to my Bed, Bath and Brunch Shower about a week ago. So fun! I can't wait--it's April 8! Is it crazy that I've already planned my outfit? Lots of cute sundresses and skirts-with-jean-jacket combos ready to be worn!

And about the honeymoon, I will post when it's actually booked. Still not there yet.

Oh...and a fun little trinket for me. Will wear this with my rehearsal dinner dress, maybe layered with another gold necklace. I have gotten more and more "into" gold-- I used to just wear sterling silver and white gold, but there is more and more interesting yellow gold jewelry on the market these days that is not too Mr. T or too country club.

Check out Satya Jewelry -- she has some really, really cool pieces. They are yoga-inspired, and though I don't practice, I'm very into the calm mindset it promotes. This is the message behind the pendant I got: A solitary lotus blossom is displayed in the pendant’s center. The lotus embodies infinite potential while maintaining perfect grace. A symbol for new beginnings, this lotus necklace is the perfect partner for gemstone or chain-link necklaces.
I think that new beginnings part is especially appropriate! How cool, huh?

Executing the Details

We are at a point in planning where the details are executed. We buy the things we need to decorate. Plans come to fruition. My mom was in town, so she was my partner-in-crime shopping for wedding stuff (and plenty of fun clothes for herself). On Saturday, we shopped from 11am-7pm.
We made a trip to the fabric store of all fabric stores here in NC. FINALLY found the 2.5" ribbon I'd been looking for. The royal blue color will "anchor" the tables, color-wise, as shown in the original picture. The lighter blues are my favorites, so we'll use more of them. The top and bottom blues look a lot different in person, I don't think you can tell very well due to my flash. Our florist also has tons of 1.5" blue ribbon that we're going to use to supplement what we bought. Each strip of ribbon will be approximately 60" in length. That's a freaking lot of ribbon! At any rate, I am glad to have it in my hands. While I am home one weekend next month, mom and I are going to mock up a table (we're borrowing seven 8-top tables from our church) so we know exactly what type of lattice pattern we'll go with). (Update about the brown boxes (with bamboo) that will be one of three small centerpieces. My grandaddy is going to stain them all. It means so much to me that I will have his handiwork as a part of the beautiful tables--he has always been a master-craftsman. He can doanything with his hands, even at nearly 81 years of age. Love that man more than I can put into words).

While at Mary Jo's, I also found the chiffon that will be used as sashes for the bridesmaids' dresses. I'm going to have to find someone to hem them for us, but I'll wait til the dresses come in to do that. The shirt in the picture is for color representation only (it's the shirt I wore in my engagement pictures). I think the dresses are going to look absolutely FABULOUS, especially with their white hydrangea and light orange mini gerbera daisy bouquets! :)

Another place I am absolutely in love with is Garden Ridge. Let me stop right now and issue a PSA: If you are ever, ever looking for a basket of any shape, size, color, form, texture, or material, go to Garden Ridge. I was simply overwhelmed; literally 1/3 of the store is baskets. It is basket-tastic. And much cheaper than Michael's. (I am always balking at the absured $40 price tag of some of the three-basket sets at Michael's). We found these super-fine bamboo trays to hold the ceremony programs. (By the way, I have totally changed my mind about the style of program. More on that in a later post). And the trays are totally usable in our apartment once we get married.

Finally, I picked up this for myself. I need a big rolling suitcase--the only rolling suitcase I have is my carry-on sized one. The honeymoon is the perfect reason for a new one. Not only is it sturdy and functional, it's fantastically chic and girly, too. (If only it came with a matching DVF wrap dress, then I'd be good to go!) A TJ Maxx special, BTW. (Note to self: must obtain passport, ASAP! I guess that means I should share where we're going on the honeymoon too, huh?) :)

Other updates:
I have about 92% of the addresses I need for the invitations. When you consider that we're inviting over 400 people, that means I am in good shape! Ordering the invites and embosser this week!

I hired a videographer a couple of weeks ago. I know that some people (my mom and J, for two) think that they're unnecessary (why not have cousin Lenny do it), but I really wanted a professional who would create a masterpiece. I am just the cheeseball type of person who wants to relive the whole day, over and over. Beyond my wonderful memories. Beyond the photographic beauty. And I found a videographer who is so fantastic, and she's such a great person, too. She creates DVDs with menus so you can individually select Ceremony (in it's entirety), Reception highlights (first dance, cake cutting, bouquet toss, plus edited "best of" dancing moments), the groom getting ready. The bride getting ready. The whole DVD is set to 5 or 6songs of our choosing. You just have to check out her website and see; I wish you could see her demo DVD and see why she just rocks my world.

J and I also worked on our timeline of how the reception will play out. From what happens the minute the guests show up (oldies, beach music, motown tunes etc) to what happens after the bride and groom are introduced (we are going to immediately go to the cake, my dad will say a few words, then we cut the cake, and the party gets started). It makes me feel a lot better, and it lets us play out in our heads what we need to make sure gets done. Who's going to replenish the favor table? where will the cake slices be moved to? etc etc.

We also tackled the SONG LIST. Now, I may've mentioned before, but J is so serious about the music. He is so into music, period. Take whatever man you know who loves listening to music, finding out new bands, eschewing pop music--and multiply it by 10. And then you have J. Everyone is counting on my fiance to plan the "party" after the ceremony because that's just his bag. As you can imagine, the play list for the reception is a huge deal. Over the past several months--on car trips, watching TV, etc, we've compiled a few lists of songs we'd like to consider for the reception. I typed all of them up in Excel. I gave J a copy. He put an "x" by his MUST PLAYS and an "x" by his PLEASE PLAYS (which in essence is the bank from which the DJ will play). I did the same thing. Then, we made a list of all the songs we both x'd, and narrowed that down to 25. (The remaining songs went in the PLEASE PLAY bank, and the ones neither one of us x'd are tossed). LOL, are we anal or what?! :)

If you're interested, here is the list of 25 must-plays, not including the first dances (in no certain order):

First Dance - Everthing I Do, I Do it For You (J is really throwing me a bone with this one. He doesn't really like Bryan Adams, but I've wanted to dance to this song since Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves (my fave movie!) came out in 1991.

Father-Daughter Dance TBA! My dad is being no help on this one! Considering the stand bys of My Girl, You are the Sunshine of My Life, etc. Any suggestions are welcome! :)

Mother-Son Dance J and his mom are dancing to Simple Man by lynyrd skynyrd. If you have not heard this song, download it immediately. It brings me to tears absolutely ever time I hear it. Amazing song.

1. Devil Went Down to Georgia, Charlie Daniels Band)
2. White Trash Wedding, Dixie Chicks (no insinuations, of course)
3. Shook Me All Night Long, AC/DC
4. Ice Ice Baby, Vanilla Ice
5. Wild Thang, Tone Loc
6. It Take Two, Robb Base
7. Brick House, Commodores
8. Rock this Town, Stray Cats
9. Ride That Train, Quad City DJs
10. Wake Me Up! Wham
11. Faith, George Michael (YES, I love me some 80's George Michael!)
12. Cotton Eye Joe, Rednexx
13. Hot in Herre, Nelly
14. Yeah!, Usher
15. Nuthin' but a G Thang, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg
16. Let me Clear my Throat, DJ Kool
17. I Love You More Today (than Yesterday), Goldfinger
18. Take On Me, Reel Big Fish (not A-Ha, these are some of Jay's punk/ska bands' covers. They rock)
19. Pressure Drop, Toots and the Maytals (1960s ska, predates reggae, go download it)

20. Brown-Eyed Girl, Van Morrison (because I am one, and that song rocks!)
21. Stagger Lee, Lloyd Price (we South Carolinians shag to this song...remember the movie? It's beach music.
22. Let's Get it On, Marvin Gaye
23. Wicked Game, Chris Isaak
24. At Last, Etta James

Ok, so we have about 25 songs. I think we added another one at the last minute. But you get the idea.

More exciting plans that have been made...My Bachelorette Weekend. Or rather, what I call "Bridesmaids Weekend." Bachelorette Weekend insinuates strippers and tiaras and dancing on bar tables wearing life-saver coated "suck for a buck" tee shirts, and that is not my scene at all. It's just a weekend for me and my best girls to have a great time AT THE BEACH laying out, staying up late talking, eating out, shopping, whatever. I absolutely cannot wait. My sister is heading up the whole shindig, because they'll also give me a lingerie shower that weekend, too ;) My sis is loving the planning.

Here are some pictures of the newly-built, all beach-front hotel where we're staying. And it's all cool because my best friend got married there last November, so we already know what to expect!

How's that for an update. It's getting close! Less than 3 months away, now, people! So exciting :)

Engagement Photo Sneak Peek

See the heart? Just a case of photo kismet! We turned down the alley beside our photographers' studio, walked half-way down, and there it was. Someone had adhered a white felt heart right onto the brick. Isn't that the neatest thing? So we took several pictures "with" it. Love it when things like that happen.

I haven't seen the rest of our proofs yet (Bryan is mailing them to me), so you've seen as much as I have. This was the Riersons' favorite shot, so they posted it on their website, yay!

Check them out, if you get a chance. Rierson Photography and at Bryan's personal/commercial photography site, Rierson Photo.com (some really gritty, cool stuff there). They are an absolute blast, and so game for anything crazy and fun and artistic.

Registering

I spent an hour last night reorganizing my wedding binder--extracting inspiration and ideas that I don't need anymore, updating it with reciepts and contracts, and typing up some lists. It was all kinds of fun. Seriously. :)

Not as fun, though, as REGISTERING FOR GIFTS. Holy cow--Is there anything more fun than picking out your dream china, cutlery, appliances, and gadgets then scanning them in with a fun gun? Why is that red line and electronic beep so satisfying? I think it goes back to the childhood days of longing to scan your own groceries (which is possible now, but not as cool because you're having to pay for it all.) Anytime I can unabashadly ask for gifts, I'm game. ;)

We found our Everyday China, Columbus Circle Black by Studio Nova, a Mikasa line. As luck would have it, it is being discontinued. (I hear this is fairly common, right?) The Mikasa reps says they still have in-stock 8,000 4-pc place settings, 12,000 dinner plates, 11,000 salad plates, etc, so that we should be okay--it usually takes a year or more for them to sell out of a stock like that. The good news is, on the Mikasa site, a 4-pc place setting is only $19.99! The difficult part about that is, my parents' hometown friends are, well, less inclined to purchase things online. (Come, come join us in the 21st century) ;) I may go ahead and start purchasing some sets myself; I just really like the china!

Mikasa also makes our crystal. Initially, I was against registering for crystal b/c I think it's fussy and unattractive. Really, all the cut engraving and such is so not my style. But at BBB, Jay found Mikasa Panache, which is very clean-lined and not etched in any way. Hurrah! The crystal has a rounded square "mouth" (I don't know if that's the correct terminology, but you get it.

In case you're wondering, we registered at the following places:
Bed Bath and Beyond
Belk
Williams-Sonoma
Home Depot
Mikasa.com

If you know my last name, and if you're curious, it's not hard to go online and view our registries. I will show you some pictures of things I really want, too, how 'bout that?

Bed Bath and Beyond

BBB has a line of Jonathan Adler stuff. Jonathan Adler rocks my world. He's usually not affordable (modern furnishings never are) but I love so much us his BBB line. For instance, the red shower curtain.
Image hosting by Photobucket
Williams-Sonoma
This is where J gets a little wild in the eyes. Boy loves him some good cookware and appliances. I will say that lifting Le Creuset is good exercise for the forearms. J's parents so graciously started us out with a four-piece set for Christmas; here are some other things we (J mostly) like. (You are my kindred spirit if you "get" the bottom picture).

One month ago, I had my LASIK surgery. :) It has only been in the last week and a half that my vision has improved to the level I'm satisfied with. And I found out today: I have 20/15 vision in both eyes!!! So all of you who want to do it, but are putting it off, DO IT!

Two Weeks Worth

Sorry this is so overdue, work has been CRAZY over the last couple of weeks. It is our busiest time of year.

FEB 24-26
The engagement photo session (Feb 25) with Rierson Photography went very well. Bryan and Jo Rierson, who are shooting our wedding, also did our engagement shoot. Bryan was lead shooter, with Jo taking pictures but also assisting Bryan with reflectors and equipment when necessary.

The weather was a bit uncooperative (very overcast), and toward the end of the shoot the wind picked up so much that even Bryan was rearranging my hair, LOL! I have the world's most long-suffering hair, for sure.

As most of you know, we were going for sort of an edgy, urban feel for our photos. Luckily, the Rierson's studio is in one of the artsy parts of uptown Raleigh, so we started right in the alley beside one of the storefronts. There is a lot of distressed, old Raleigh brick that will hopefully make for a cool background. From there we walked to the train depot, then to the neighboring park for some traditional "newspaper-worthy" shots, then to a local museum, then down one of the busy streets for some traffic/parking meter/sidewalk shots.

I wish I felt more comfortable in the camera lens! I felt like such a complete, inhibited dork the whole time! Plus, Jay kept reminding me "real smile, real smile!" As opposed to my more controlled grin. Jay was laughing the entire time because he thinks the whole process of photoshoots is cheesy.

At any rate, they took about 5-6 rolls of film (yes, we're all film sticklers--they have their own dark room and hand-develop everything). Bryan has some cool creative processes that I don't know too much about, except that it creates a really cool vintage look to some of the photos. Here is a link to that kind of shot...he is going to process some of our engagement & some of our wedding shots that way. They took a great deal of digital, too.

The best part about the photoshoot was getting to know and becoming more comfortable with our photographers. I think this will make a world of difference during the wedding weekend. What's more, they are totally geeked that we want them to be ultra creative-- i.e. tilted shots, crazy compositions, different processes, etc. People who are really passionate about their art, their craft, love this kind of creative free reign.

We expect the proofs by early next week--and with their blessing, will be excited to share!

Had a fabulous weekend in Raleigh all around. Went to an AC/Dixie show with J's bro-in-law and his friends Friday night. AC/Dixie is a bluegrass AC/DC cover band. How funny is that? They do original material, too. Tons of fun with a wicked-talented banjo player.

Also had brunch at Lucky32 Sunday morning with the ever-fabulous Gabbyfek! Always a pleasure to meet up with her. :) HUGS to Gabby right now; thinking of you sweetie.

March 4-5

Back to my hometown to meet with the organist/music director on Saturday. Cannot convey how much I love this guy and his talent. Highly recommended by my church's minister of music, he indeed blew me away. I had decided on about half of the musical selections, and needed his expertise and suggestions on the other half. He brought in a huge selection of music, mainly less often heard classical pieces and hymns at my request. We crafted a beautiful, interesting, challenging, varied program that I am SO excited about. that HE is so excited about. Again, it goes to show you, those individuals who are so into their craft get so excited about working outside of the box.

I found my espresso brown tableclo
ths this weekend! They are "Dark Brown Bengaline", which is the espresso with a slight sheen and texture of fine grograin ribbon. They look great. I also found the unfinished boxes for my table centerpieces (flanked with fat squares vases) that will house tall, green bamboo and a cascade of orchids. My grandaddy is going to stain the boxes dark brown for me :) The fat square vases will be filled with water and have bunches of flowers in varying colors/heights.

Met with the Florist/Wedding Director again on Sunday. I brought in some boxes/vases, etc. I had purchased, and we more concretely worked them into the theme/color/layout idea.

The theme of our reception is NOSTALGIA MODERN

Modern: clean lines, square vases, wooden table runners, bamboo in brown boxes, elegant blue/brown combo.

Nostalgic:
Baseball touches and favors, tin signs, tubs filled with bottle Cokes (outside on the deck), family photos, etc.

My wedding shoes came in. Thrilled with them. Glamourous and so comfortable, too. Not as shiny as the picture shows.
Ordered our wedding favors. Another surprise I am so excited about. So personal, so unique. Can't tell just yet, but trust me, they are awesome.
